(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray, government officials and representatives of the development and financing teams today celebrated the grand opening of The Avenue at Park Morton – a public-private collaborative project that provides affordable housing for rent along the northern corridor of historic Georgia Avenue NW in Ward 1.
“I’m excited to celebrate the opening of this 100 percent affordable-housing project,” Mayor Gray said. “Ensuring that we continue to increase the supply of affordable housing in the District is a crucial goal of my One City Action Plan, and I thank the Park Morton Development Partners and everyone who worked together to make this project happen."
Principals from the development partnership, Park Morton Development Partners — a joint venture between Landex Corporation and The Warrenton Group – were joined by Mayor Gray, At-Large Councilmember Michael Brown, Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Victor L. Hoskins, Department of Housing and Community Development Director Michael Kelly, D.C. Housing Authority Director Adrianne Todman, D.C. Housing Finance Agency Director Harry Sewell, and Christine Kaufmann of Freddie Mac to celebrate the grand opening of the completion of the first phase of the Park Morton New Community Initiative.
The new construction contains a total of 83 units, including one- and two-bedroom units. Additionally, the project boasts amenities such as meeting rooms, a lounge, a fitness center, underground parking, and ground-floor retail space.
The Avenue at Park Morton’s opening marks more than 1,300 units of affordable housing that have been brought online through the economic-development efforts of the Gray Administration. More than 1,400 additional units of affordable housing are currently in the District’s pipeline through those efforts.
“My office’s commitment to quality affordable housing development is well represented in projects like The Avenue at Park Morton,” said Deputy Mayor Hoskins. “We look forward to continuing our work with developers and financiers to continue leveraging public and private partnerships to build affordable housing and revitalize neighborhood corridors across the District.”
The project's completion comes after the launch of the Mayor's Comprehensive Housing Strategy Task Force, which is charged with looking at existing options and recommending ways to increase the District's affordable housing stock for all populations. Later this year, the task force will report on its first set of recommendations.
