Whole Foods Market at Gateway DC Returns to Ward 8

Weekend market at St. Elizabeths East Campus will offer healthy food options

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) welcomes back Whole Foods Market for its third season of the highly successful Whole Foods Market at Gateway DC, at the St. Elizabeths East Campus.

“As we strive to give all Washingtonians a fair shot, we must also give them better food options, which have not always been available to residents east of the river. The District looks forward to continuing our partnership with Whole Foods as we improve the health of residents across all 8 wards,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Events DC, Whole Foods and DMPED are in the process of finalizing a complete 2016 calendar that will anchor the market as a weekend, family-friendly destination. The Whole Foods Market is currently confirmed one Saturday of each summer month from 10 a.m.–2 p.m., and the kick-off date is Saturday, May 21, 2016.

“I am pleased to see healthy food options moving East of the River,” said Ward 8 Councilmember LaRuby May. “The return of the weekend Whole Foods Market at Gateway DC helps to fulfill my ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for all Ward 8 Residents.”

“Serving and supporting our local community by providing access to healthy eating options is at the core of what our stores are about every day,” said Scott Allshouse, president of Whole Foods Market Mid-Atlantic region. “We’re honored to bring that experience to the people of Ward 8 and look forward to our third year of monthly Saturday markets at St. Elizabeths.”

As the premier events venue in Ward 8, Gateway DC, now managed by Events DC, will take a fresh approach to engaging the community and promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles east of the river.

“Whole Foods Market has become a signature event in the summer at Gateway DC and we are providing opportunities for local non-profits to build awareness for their health and wellness initiatives alongside Whole Foods Market at Gateway DC,” says Erik A. Moses, senior vice president and managing director of Events DC. “These partnerships will help to enhance an already fantastic community amenity for residents.”
