In May 2017, seven proposals were revealed for Petworth’s Hebrew for the Aged, each one focusing on senior and affordable housing. Three months later, the development team was chosen, being Victory Housing and Brinshore Development. The Petworth News local blog now has updates on the planned project.

According to Petworth News, these updates include a minor expansion to the existing building’s top floor and plans for 88 units reserved for affordable senior housing and two-thirds of the remaining 91 additional units used as affordable housing.

The senior housing units will be located in the 1925-built former Hebrew Home, while the rentals will be located in a newly constructed building adjacent to the structure. This LEED Gold-certified community will be called Spring Flats once complete.

Petworth News further reported that some of the community benefits offered with the redevelopment will likely include a new Capital Bikeshare station, a renovated park facing Spring Road, a space for public art, and a community room.

The historic building once served Jewish seniors from 1925 until the late 1960s. Afterwards, when the District bought the property for $13 million, the building became a mental health facility for the homeless. Since 2009, the building has been vacant.

In 2010, the Department of Human Services proposed redeveloping the property into a homeless shelter, but Mayor Muriel Bowser shot those plans down. In 2014, there were also plans to redevelop the site with 200 affordable units, but those plans also fell through.

The Hebrew Home for the Aged is located at 1125 Spring Road NW.
