More Childcare Seats Are Coming: Mayor Bowser to Kick Off Renovations at Historic Stevens School

Sunday, June 17, 2018
Stevens School to open in school year 2020-2021 as child care center and DCPS Early Childhood Education Center

On Monday, June 18, at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will kick off renovations that will transform the former Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School, a national historic landmark, into a DC Public Schools (DCPS) Early Childhood Education Center with PK3 and PK4 classes and a child care center for infants and toddlers ages 0 to 3 that will be managed by a community-based organization.

The project delivers on Mayor Bowser’s commitment to reactivate dormant historic buildings in order to provide needed community benefits. The Stevens School, which is scheduled to open by school year 2020-2021, will create more childcare seats for District families. The event will also highlight the start of construction for the adjacent commercial and retail uses.
