Mayor Vincent C. Gray Announces First-Round Recipients of H Street NE Retail Priority Grant Program

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced the first round of awards today for the H Street NE Retail Priority Grant Program. The grants are meant to stimulate small-business development and expansion while also creating new job opportunities for District residents along the booming H Street NE retail-and-entertainment strip.

“I congratulate all of today’s awardees,” said Mayor Gray. “These entrepreneurs play an important part in the continued revitalization of our H Street corridor. The awards will allow these small-business owners to expand their operations, diversify their product lines and create new job opportunities in the process – benefitting both the immediate neighborhood and the entire city.”

Today’s awardees include:

  • The C.A.T. Walk Boutique, located at 1404 H Street NE: A women’s boutique selling new and consigned clothing;
  • H Street Care Pharmacy and Wellness Center, located at 812 H Street NE: An independently owned and operated neighborhood pharmacy;
  • Stan’s Inc., located at 822 H Street NE: A men’s clothing store that has operated on H Street NE since 1978; and
  • The Studio Group/Bikram Yoga of Capitol Hill, located at 410 H Street NE: A yoga studio and retail space frequented by over 100 attendees daily.

“Small businesses play a crucial role in retail corridors all cross the District,” said Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Victor L. Hoskins. “We look forward to our continued work with interested merchants along the H Street NE corridor for years to come.”

The grant program was created by the H Street NE Retail Priority Area Incentive Act of 2010. The program’s two proposed phases are being administered by the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. Ten new applications for the second round of the program were submitted on January 4, 2012. Additional awards will be announced this spring.
