Mayor Fenty Breaks Ground on Housing Units at Sheridan Station

(Washington, DC) - Today, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) Valerie Santos, Department of Housing and Community Development (DCHD) Director Leila Edmonds, and DC Housing Authority Interim Director Adrianne Todman joined from the William C. Smith Cos. and the Ward 8 community to break ground on the first of four phases in the Sheridan Station residential development project at the intersection of Sheridan and Bowen Roads, SE.

The new Sheridan Station replaces the old Sheridan Terrace residence, which was a 183-unit public housing project that was demolished in 1997 and spanned across Pomeroy and Sheridan Roads, SE. The first phase of Sheridan Station is 150,000 square feet and costs $27.5 million for 114 units which include 25 replacement housing units for the neighboring Barry Farm residence. All units will be affordable housing at up to 60 percent of the area median income.

“The start of this new development demonstrates our continued commitment to growing and improving our inventory of high quality affordable housing in the District of Columbia,” said Mayor Fenty. “A top priority is to provide housing for former Sheridan Terrace residents. This project also marks an important step forward for the Barry Farm New Communities Initiative.”

The project is a partnership led by the District’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, the District of Columbia Housing Authority and the William C. Smith Cos. Phase I is expected to be completed by early 2012. Upon completion of all four phases, the 9.8 acre Sheridan Station will boast 344 housing units at a cost of $100 million and LEED Gold certification. The next phases include the construction of townhomes for rent and for sale. The DC Housing Authority (DCHA) has received a $5.8 million federal stimulus grant and a $20 million HOPE VI grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for the development of Sheridan Station; it is DCHA’s seventh HOPE VI project.

Development for an additional 99 units of affordable housing including 35 Barry Farm replacement units will break ground this summer at Matthews Memorial on Martin Luther King Junior Avenue, SE.
