District to Use Proceeds of the Sale to Help Close FY09-FY10 Budget Gap

(Washington, DC) – The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development today announced the District sold a 16.1 acre site at DC Village to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for $6.45 million. The authority plans to build a new bus garage on the Ward 8 site to replace its former M Street garage near Nationals Park, which closed earlier this year.

“This is a great deal for the city,” said Deputy Mayor Valerie Santos. “The project will not only bring much needed job opportunities East of the River, it will provide significant resources to help us off set our current budget gap.”

WMATA plans to build a $90 million facility to house 114 buses that serve not only the District, but the Washington region. The site is large enough that the facility could be expanded to house up to 250 buses. Site preparation work can begin immediately.

WMATA sold its former bus garage at Half and M Streets SE to a private development entity that will build a mixed-use project next to Nationals Park and the Navy Yard Metrorail Station.
