District Calls for Proposals for St. Elizabeths East Programmatic Anchor
WASHINGTON, DC – In a significant step toward fulfilling its vision to transform the iconic St. Elizabeths East campus into a thriving center of innovation, commerce, education, and community enrichment, the District of Columbia’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) today issued a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) from institutions, organizations or businesses interested in serving as a programmatic anchor at the site. This RFEI is a catalytic first step of a multi-phase development process for the historic campus which spans approximately 180 acres.
“St. Elizabeths East represents an extraordinary opportunity to cultivate and leverage significant economic investments, while at the same bringing new services and amenities to the neighborhoods surrounding this historic gem,” said Victor Hoskins, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development for the District of Columbia. “We seek entities that can help the District create a comprehensive innovative environment that includes an educational campus, community-focused center, and innovation marketplace,” he said.
For the past two years, the District of Columbia has been diligently developing a physical redevelopment plan and complimentary economic development strategy to guide the critical revitalization of the East Campus of St. Elizabeths – the largest effort of its kind in the City. After completion of the Master Plan earlier this year, the redevelopment efforts at the campus are moving into an implementation phase. DMPED is particularly interested in receiving proposals from entities with the ability to develop a comprehensive innovative environment that focuses on activities that support the Security, Energy, and Sustainability sectors, areas where the region possesses considerable strength and competitive advantage. Activities at St. Elizabeths East could include educational uses, community-oriented programming, professional development and training, business incubation, late-stage research, commercialization, corporate R & D, product marketing, and capital investment.
