New Park in LeDroit Park

Illustration of the New Park in LeDroit Park

The District of Columbia through the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Development (DMPED) created a new public park on the site of the former Gage-Eckington Elementary School at 2025 3rd Street, NW in LeDroit Park. Since the closing of the school in 2008, the District had worked with the community to determine a positive re-use for the land. DMPED contributed $1.5 million towards the park and awarded an additional $100,000 grant to the LeDroit Park Civic Association and Common Good Farm for the creation and maintenance of a community garden on the site.

The 112,000-square-foot park was completed in January 2011 and includes the following:

  • Multi-use playing field
  • Dog park
  • Children’s garden
  • Jogging and walking path
  • Rain garden and botanical plazas
  • Playground areas for ages 3–6, 7–12
  • Garden plots
