Mayor Vincent C. Gray & Deputy Mayor Victor L. Hoskins Launch Vision 5 of District's Five-Year Economic Development Strategy

Wednesday, March 20, 2013
Host Forum in Ward 5 to Discuss Building a Best-In-Class Global Medical Center

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) Victor L. Hoskins today launched the execution of Vision 5 of the District’s Five-Year Economic Development Strategy. The vision outlines goals and recommendations for the District to work toward building a best-in-class global medical center, with the McMillan Reservoir site in Ward 5 serving as a medical office hub.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor launched the effort with a forum with medical-sector stakeholders.

“Vision 5 of The Five-Year Economic Development Strategy is one that will allow the District and our private-sector partners to create a world-class medical center – and today’s forum kicks off a series of necessary conversations that will aid us immeasurably in achieving that goal,” said Mayor Gray. “I want to thank the private-sector leaders from our university, medical and real-estate communities for being here today to help us execute this vision of the strategy together, because we need everyone at the table to help the District realize its job-creation and revenue goals.”

At the forum, hosted in Trinity University’s O’Connor Auditorium, Mayor Gray and Deputy Mayor Hoskins were joined by representatives from the medical technology, research, and hospital communities in addition to university leaders, real-estate developers and DMPED staff focused on business development and real estate. One of the recommendations for bringing the medical-hub vision to reality is the District facilitating regular communication between DMPED, universities, hospitals and local developers to keep them abreast of each other’s new projects. In panel discussions, participants talked about providing health-care services in a best-in-class global medical center as well as educating a workforce and developing real estate for such a center.

“I want to thank everyone who attended and participated in today’s forum,” said Deputy Mayor Hoskins. “I am extremely proud to work with Mayor Gray, my team and you great private-sector partners as we work to not only implement the Five-Year Economic Development Strategy, but also as we advance realization of Vision 5 – building a best-in-class global medical center here in the District. Today we laid groundwork upon which we will build. Our next step will be leading focus groups that concentrate on needs assessments among potential partners co-locating or partnering in spaces that will provide centralized medical-related services, and we will also focus on other outputs that will provide a more foundational understanding of what will be required for a world-class medical hub to expand and flourish in the District.”

In addition to D.C. government officials, organizations represented on the forum program included:

• Bioscan
• Children’s National Medical Center
• Georgetown University
• Howard University
• MedStar Washington Hospital Center
• Property Group Partners
• Trinity University
• The George Washington University
• The Sheikh Zayed Institute
• Trammell Crow
• Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
