(WASHINGTON, DC) –  This week, the Deputy Mayor’s Office for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) officially completed all pre-construction and infrastructure obligations as outlined in the agreement terms for a new soccer stadium in Ward 6. The District now hands over the site to D.C. United to begin construction on the $300 million state-of-the-art facility.

“The District has found the back of the net, preparing the site for construction – on time and on schedule –  exactly when we said we would,” said Deputy Mayor Brian T. Kenner. “Today’s milestone is proof positive of our ability to deliver for D.C. United, its fans and the thousands of District residents this project will benefit in the years to come.”

Last year, the District filed for eminent domain to acquire site control at Buzzard Point in preparation for construction of a new stadium and in April 2016, Mayor Muriel Bowser, District officials, and D.C. United joined for an infrastructure groundbreaking.

Since that time, the District has worked expeditiously to prepare the land, including site control, above-grade structure demolition, and disposal and removal of outdated utilities.

Through negotiations with D.C. United, the Bowser Administration was able to ensure that the stadium provides robust community benefits for District residents and secured and executed a No Relocation Agreement.

The soccer stadium is a public-private partnership that will create nearly 900 job opportunities for District residents, and strengthen the city’s commitment to community and fan engagement. Training, apprenticeships, and workforce development opportunities will be provided to connect neighborhood residents to jobs stemming from this project.
