Resources for Small Businesses 


Business Counselors

  • DC Small Business Development Center Network – Business assistance centers located at Anacostia Economic Development Corporation, DC Chamber of Commerce (Downtown and Takoma Park), Howard University (GADGET Center and Business School), and the University of the District of Columbia (Van Ness), which provide training and counseling services to DC entrepreneurs and businesses. 
  • DC Bar Pro Bono Program – Provides legal counseling and information resources to help small businesses and community-based non-profits. 

Market Analysis

  • University of Wisconsin/Wisconsin Main Street Center – Provides a market analysis guidebook that helps businesses identify target markets to improve their selection of goods/services to meet market demand. 
  • Nonprofit Organization Development – A resource center for those seeking grants and training and technical assistance related to running a non-profit organization.

Public Space

  • DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) – Processes permits to open sidewalk café, host commercial district events, install street furniture, and operate valet parking service. 

Streetscape Improvements

  • DDOT – Streetscape improvement projects. 

Storefront Improvements

  • DSLBD Storefront Improvement Program – Provides assistance to improve appearance of retail storefront businesses and position them to positively contribute to the neighborhood commercial district.
  • DHCD (DC Department of Housing and Community Development) Storefront Façade Improvement Program –  Manages storefront facade programs.

Main Street Development

  • National Trust Main Street Center (NTMSC) – Revitalization and management of downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.
