CityMarket at O

Located directly north of Downtown Washington, CityMarket at O will be a 1 million-square foot urban infill project that will include over 87,000 square feet of retail, 600+ residential units, and over 500 parking spaces. CityMarket at O will serve as the catalyst for the revitalization of the Shaw community, one of Washington's oldest commercial, residential, and cultural districts.

Shaw residents have long called for the redevelopment of the O Street Market area. The Fenty administration committed $35 million in tax increment financing (TIF) and $2.5 million in predevelopment funds for the project. Roadside Development is the developer of the project.

CityMarket at O is will have major economic benefits for the surrounding community, producing up to 390 full time jobs and up to 500 construction jobs. The Roadside Development team has given over a quarter of a million dollars back to the neighborhood in the form of scholarships, donations and amenities to local resident programs.  Additionally, both Roadside Development and Giant have committed to recruiting and hiring Shaw residents for CityMarket at O.

Constructed in 1881, the O Street Market was one of several public markets that served Washingtonians during the 19th Century. Over the years, the Market functioned not only as a market but as a place for residents to meet and socialize. The CityMarket at O will recreate this experience when the historic Market is restored and incorporated into a new 71,000-square foot Giant Food Store.

Construction broke ground on September 1, 2010 with the preservation and securing of the historic market structure.  This will be succeeded by the closing of the Giant Food store in January 2011 and the razing of the store and excavation beginning in February 2011.  The Giant will reopen twenty-four months after closing with hotel and housing opening a year later.
