In April of 2009 the federal government declared 62.5 acres on the main post of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC as surplus property, thereby making it available to a local redevelopment authority (“LRA”) for re-use. As part of this process, the Local Redevelopment Authority (LRA) must prepare a plan for reuse of the site in order to acquire a portion of the site for local use.

Location: 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20307  Site Area (GSF): 62.5 Acres

LRA Committee Reuse Plan Approved October 2010

The Final Draft Plan for the reuse of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Campus (WRAMC) is now complete.

Representatives from the Local Redevelopment Authority, and the District spent months collaborating with the community and the reuse planning team, to collectively develop a plan that would best serve the needs of the community.

Three public workshops and a Town Hall Meeting were held in order to engage citizens and gather their input. Residents of Ward 4 and adjoining neighborhoods were able to directly tell the representatives what they wanted to see included in the reuse plan.

The Walter Reed Final Draft Reuse Plan provides a vision, framework, and detailed case for the reuse of 62.5 acres as a mixed use facility that will serve the community, the District, and the surrounding area, providing both economic growth and needed facilities.

Stakeholders should submit written comments to the District at walterreedplan@dc.gov or 202.727.6703 (fax) no later than close of business on November 19, 2010.

Part of the Walter Reed Campus became available due to a federally-mandated Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. The Local Redevelopment Authority lead by the District of Columbia's Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, and included community representatives, has engages in a planning process to prepare a plan in alignment with District, federal government, community, and BRAC goals.

This Final Draft Plan is a key component of the District's application to the Department of Defense and the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the successful conveyance of the property to the District. The Reuse Plan will serve as the preferred federal land use plan for the future development of the site.
